2 types of fillings: Amalgam (silver) and composite (tooth colored). Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Amalgam fillings:
Pros: -durable -easy to use -highly resistant to wear
Cons: -possible short-term sensitivity to hot or cold after it is placed -not natural looking -more tooth structure loss in preparation for the filling

Composite Fillings:
Pros: -provide good quality and resistance in small to medium size restorations -less tooth structure loss in preparation for the filling -natural looking
Cons: -generally takes longer to place -more costly
